Couch! and a meeting with an old friend

Wednesday, 27 June, 2018

Maybe one day we will buy a new couch but so far every attempt has failed. The couch is either too short, too long, too uncomfortable, too expensive… There have been five failed tries – the Ikea couch was too big, so too was the couch at Sofa Workshop, one that was advertised online was too short, the couch at a floor model sale wasn’t comfortable enough, and the Conran couch wasn’t sturdy enough. So I’m stuck with a couch that I can’t stretch out on and that sags in the middle. We think an interim step we can live with is to replace the foam inside the cushions. Soon! We did need to make two visits to Westfield, though.

I have a friend who i met through volunteering with Digital Eve UK (formerly the wonderful Webgrrls. I’ve been so fortunate in my life to be involved in organisations – paid and unpaid – where there are very strong, creative women. Webgrrls was formed to help women break into technological fields back in the day when women weren’t accepted in the industry. I was the volunteer coordinator of the amazing Toronto chapter.  I feel it was the Golden Age of the organisation. The women were amazing and some are still my friends today. We had a strong bond.

DigitalEve grew out of Webgrrls after a dispute. Since it was international, I joined the UK chapter on a visit to London. I had switched from Volunteer Coordinator to editor of their digital magazine and now I was going to help the UK chapter get its own magazine started. And that’s when I met Lisa. Coincidentally, she was from Toronto.

Lisa helped me get work back in those days. Then she got married and we drifted apart. She popped back into my life when she found out I made dolls and asked me to make one for her daughter. In return, she’d give me a bowl that she’d made in her ceramics class. We decided to do the trade in a restaurant near Kings Cross – a good middle point!
